Graduate Recruitment Consultant – Two promotions in 12 months!

So, to be looking at this job advert you have an interest in working in Recruitment. Let me talk you through the first twelve months of a Graduate I placed in the same business in January 2016.

His profile

After graduating in summer 2015 with a 2:1 from a top 40 University, he spent 6 months working in a B2B sales environment local to his parents’ home, the role was heavily micro-managed and selling a product that wasn’t particularly motivating. The OTE was unrealistic and the career progression non-existent. He wanted out and decided Recruitment was the way forward.

The job search

I spoke with him, understood what he wanted and set him up an interview with this IT Recruiter, formed in 2010, grown to have offices in London New York and Manchester with their London headcount around 30, not to mention a bonus scheme that offers consultants a chance to earn commission on monthly performance but also on a quarterly and annual bonus as well!  The process was quick, over within a week.

The first 3 months

They were tough, recruitment is a steep learning curve and certainly everyone thinks it’s going to be easier than it is. A huge amount to learn from the initial headhunt/candidate call all the way to being able to manage a candidate through a job search. The hours were long, rejection felt like it was happening daily. Like anyone within their first 3 months it’s a rollercoaster!

After 6 months

Starting to understand and grow into the role, the roller coaster is starting to have more ups and downs! Achieving his first promotion from Researcher to Consultant and going onto the “Winners Lunch Club” the rewards of recruitment are starting to materialise, the first 3 months sweat and blood are starting to reap rewards.

12 months

2nd promotion achieved, becoming a key member of the team and well on his way to progressing to a manager within the next 12/18 months. His network has vastly improved, dual desking and regularly placing contact/permanent staff! Loving life in Recruitment and very happy with his first 12 months in Recruitment and earning over £30k along the way!


The business is now looking to add another 4 superstars into their business, 2016 they achieved record revenue and are now looking to kick on and repeat the same level of success. If you fit the following profile, then please get in touch.
